Obituary for Mary Smith

We have lost an amazing Mother, Grandmother, Aunt, Friend, Business Woman, and Volunteer. Mary Smith passed away June 4, 2018 at Timmins and District Hospital after a brief but valiant battle with cancer, with her family at her side.

Some might remember her as the co-owner of Eddy Office Supply and then later Eddy’s Card and Gift Shoppe. She loved her gift shop, helping couples choose the perfect china and crystal for their bridal registries or others in selecting just the right gift for someone! Her most recent career was crossing guard at the corner of Pine Street South and Lee Avenue. She held that post for almost 20 years, rarely missing a day! She loved the children and their stories and all of the waves she received from the regulars driving by on a daily basis.

Her love of cooking led her to The Lord’s Kitchen where she was head cook for several years. She created lasting friendships with all of the dedicated volunteers she worked with each week.

She was also a very dedicated member of the McIntyre Curling Club for many, many years. She held various executive positions and was always involved as a volunteer at bonspiels and other special events hosted by The Club, usually cooking!

Her love of curling and travel blended well. She travelled with our dad and several curling friends to many a Briar and World Championship to see the sights and watch the game they loved. Their room was usually a gathering place with food and drink for all! When Mary no longer travelled to these events, she never missed a game on television, often staying up until all hours watching, especially if her guy, “The Gushe”, was playing.

It is very difficult to capture 83 years of a life well lived in a few short paragraphs. Mary Smith loved her family and friends, and lending a helping hand. Her home was always open to all and there was never a shortage of food, drink and laughter. You are loved and you will be missed.

Mary passed away at Timmins and District Hospital June 4, 2018 at the age of 83. She was predeceased by her husband Bob Smith (March 31, 2001). Loving mother of Penny (Gerard) Paquette and Rob (Carole) Smith. Dear grandmother of Matt (Melissa), Paul (Taylor), Greg (Brooke Wilson), David Paquette and Robbie Smith, and great-grandchildren Owen, Riley and Meredith. She is also survived by her brother John (Eva, predeceased) Bozek of Brampton, sister-in-law Gwelda (Steve, predeceased) Bozek of London, brother-in-law Alex (Gloria, predeceased) Smith of Timmins and sister-in-law Ann Darke of Ottawa, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother Mike (Eileen) Bozek and sister Jessie (Peter) Maley.

We would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff at TDH; our mother was treated with kindness, courtesy, respect and compassion in Emergency, the Second and Third floors and finally in the Hospice Centre.

Respecting her wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral service. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Donations made to The Lord’s Kitchen Society, The Hospice Centre at TDH or the charity of your choice will be gratefully acknowledged by the family. Arrangements have been entrusted with LESSARD-STEPHENS FUNERAL HOME
