Obituary for Monseigneur Jacques Landriault
C’est avec une profonde tristesse que nous annonçons le décès de Monseigneur Jacques Landriault, Évêque du diocèse de Timmins de 1971 à 1990.
Mgr Jacques Landriault est né à Alfred, Ontario le 23 septembre 1921, fils cadet d’une famille de 11 enfants, du mariage de feu Amédée Landriault et de feue Marie-Louise Brisebois.
Il a fait ses premières années de cours secondaire chez les Pères Montfortains à Papineauville et son cours classique à l’Université d’Ottawa où il obtient son B.A. Entré au Séminaire universitaire Saint-Paul d’Ottawa, il y obtient un B.A. en Philosophie et une Licence en Théologie.
Ordonné prêtre le 9 février 1947, Mgr Landriault fut nommé vicaire à la paroisse Notre-Dame-de-la-Protection à Noranda pendant 6 ans, et par la suite, il devient vicaire à la paroisse de Malartic.
En juillet 1953, il est nommé chancelier du diocèse de Timmins avec résidence à Haileybury.
Le 25 juillet 1962, en la cathédrale St. Finnan, il est ordonné Évêque titulaire de Cadi et Auxiliaire du diocèse d’Alexandria. De plus il est nommé vicaire général de ce diocèse et curé de la paroisse Sacré-Coeur d’Alexandria. De 1962 à 1964, Mgr Landriault participa à la deuxième et troisième session du Concile Vatican II à Rome.
Le 27 mai 1964, il est nommé évêque du diocèse de Hearst, où il oeuvre pendant 7 ans.
Le 30 mars 1971 Mgr Landriault est nommé évêque de Timmins tout en demeurant administrateur du diocèse de Hearst jusqu’en 1974. En novembre 1975, Mgr Landriault procède au déménagement de l’évêché de Haileybury à Timmins où il demeura jusqu’à sa retraite, le 13 décembre 1990.
Mgr Jacques Landriault est reconnu comme un leader passionné, initiateur de renouveau dans l’Église de Timmins et précurseur de la formation des laïques.
En plus de la famille diocésaine, il laisse dans le deuil de nombreux amis ainsi que des neveux et nièces. Il fut précédé par ses frères Aurèle, Charlemagne, Gaston, Rolland, Vincent, Benoît et ses sœurs Yvette, Thérèse, Georgette et Madeleine.
Les premières funérailles, présidées par S. Ex. Mgr Terrence Prendergast, Archevêque Métropolitain d’Ottawa, auront lieu le jeudi 9 novembre 2017, à midi en la Cathédrale Notre-Dame d’Ottawa, rue Sussex; la dépouille mortelle sera exposée au même endroit à partir de 10 heures le même jour. S. Exc. Mgr Paul-André Durocher, Archevêque de Gatineau, originellement prêtre de Timmins, prononcera l’homélie.
Les secondes funérailles, présidées par S. Exc. Mgr Serge Poitras, Évêque de Timmins, auront lieu le samedi 11 novembre à midi, en la cathédrale Saint-Antoine-de-Padoue, 274 5ième avenue, Timmins. La dépouille mortelle sera exposée au même endroit le vendredi 10 novembre à partir de 14 heures jusqu’à 21 heures, ainsi que le matin des funérailles à partir de 10 heures. S. Exc. Mgr Paul-André Durocher, Archevêque d’Ottawa, originellement prêtre de Timmins, prononcera l’homélie.
Les arrangements funéraires sont confiés à la Maison Racine-Robert- Gauthier, 180 chemin Montréal, Ottawa; et à la Maison funéraire Lessard-Stephens au 21, rue Elm Sud, Timmins.

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Bishop Jacques Landriault, Bishop of the Diocese of Timmins from 1971 to 1990.
Bishop Jacques Landriault was born in Alfred, Ontario on September 23, 1921, the youngest son of a family of 11 children, of the late Amédée Landriault and the late Marie-Louise Brisebois.
He attended his first years of high school at the Montfort Fathers in Papineauville, and his classical studies at the University of Ottawa where he obtained his B.A. He entered Saint Paul University Seminary in Ottawa, where he obtained a B.A. in Philosophy and a Bachelor's degree in Theology.
Ordained to the priesthood on February 9, 1947, Bishop Landriault was appointed Associate Pastor at Notre-Dame-de-la-Protection Parish in Noranda, for 6 years, and later became Associate Pastor at the parish in Malartic.
In July 1953 he was appointed Chancellor of the Diocese of Timmins with residency in Haileybury.
On July 25, 1962, in St. Finnan Cathedral, he was ordained Titular Bishop of Cadi and Auxiliary of the Diocese of Alexandria. In addition he was appointed Vicar General of this Diocese and pastor of the Sacred Heart Parish of Alexandria. From 1962 to 1964, Bishop Landriault participated in the second and third sessions of the Second Vatican Council in Rome.
On May 27, 1964, he was appointed Bishop of the Diocese of Hearst, where he served for 7 years.
On March 30, 1971, Bishop Landriault was appointed Bishop of Timmins while remaining Administrator of the Diocese of Hearst until 1974. In November 1975, Bishop Landriault moved the Bishop’s Office and Residence from Haileybury to Timmins where he remained until his retirement on December 13, 1990.
Bishop Jacques Landriault is recognized as a passionate leader, initiator of renewal in the Church of Timmins and precursor of the formation of the laity.
In addition to the diocesan family, he is also mourned by many friends as well as nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by his brothers Aurèle, Charlemagne, Gaston, Rolland, Vincent, Benoît and his sisters Yvette, Thérèse, Georgette and Madeleine.
The first funeral, presided by His Exc. The Most Rev. Terrence Prendergast, Metropolitan Archbishop of Ottawa, will be held on Thursday, November 9, 2017 at noon in Notre Dame Cathedral, on Sussex Street; the remains will be exposed at the same place from 10:00 a.m. the same day. The Most Rev. Paul-André Durocher, Archbishop of Gatineau and originally a priest of Timmins, will preach the homily.
The second funeral, presided by His Excellency Serge Poitras, Bishop of Timmins, will take place on Saturday, November 11 at noon, at Saint Anthony of Padua Cathedral, 274 - 5th Avenue, Timmins. The exposition of the body will take place at the same location on Friday, November 10, from 2:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m., as well as the morning of the funeral from 10:00 a.m.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Maison Racine-Robert-Gauthier, 180 Montreal Road, Ottawa; and at Lessard-Stephens Funeral Home at 21 Elm Street South, Timmins.
Memorial donations can be offered to the Cathedral of Timmins.
